Wedding in 8 weeks? Your teeth-whitening countdown

UK wedding season is here. If you want whiter teeth in your photos, here's the week-by-week schedule that actually works — and the deadline you can't miss.

The first weekend of June is when UK wedding season properly starts. By the end of August, we're seeing two or three patients a week walking in saying "the wedding's in five days — can you do anything?"

The honest answer is: a bit, but not what they were hoping for. Here's the schedule that works — counting backwards from the day itself.

8 weeks out: book the consultation

This is the window. Eight weeks before the wedding, book a 20-minute whitening consultation. We're checking three things:

    • Your gum health. Whitening on inflamed gums is painful and can leave white patches at the gum line. If we spot any bleeding or recession, we want to sort it before whitening — usually a 30-minute hygiene visit and a fortnight of focused homecare does it.
    • Existing crowns, bridges, veneers, and white fillings. None of these whiten. If you have a front crown that already matches your current shade and you whiten the rest, the crown will look noticeably darker afterwards. We'll talk through whether a replacement is part of your plan or whether we work around it.
    • Sensitivity history. If you already get cold-water twinges, we'll plan the schedule differently — usually pre-treating with a sensitivity toothpaste for two weeks before starting.

6 weeks out: start the trays

Take-home trays — custom-fitted to your teeth, you wear them for 30-60 minutes a day for 10-14 days, sometimes longer for deeper staining. The big advantage is you control the pace: if your teeth feel sensitive, you skip a day. The shade builds gradually and locks in.

    4 weeks out: photo-shoot rehearsal

This is the optional but very useful step. Whatever you're using for trial wedding photos (engagement shoot, hen do, dress fitting), it's a good moment to check the shade is where you want it before the real day. We can do a top-up session if needed without risking too-white-too-fast.

    2 weeks out: stop

This is the deadline you can't miss.

Whitening dehydrates the enamel slightly, which is why the teeth look very white right after a session and settle back a touch over 7-10 days. The settled colour is the real colour. If you whiten the day before the wedding, two things happen: the photos catch peak dehydration (which can look slightly chalky under bright camera flash), and the shade you walk down the aisle with isn't the shade you'll see in your pictures the following month.

Two weeks is enough for the colour to stabilise, and crucially, enough for any temporary sensitivity to settle.

1 week out: hygiene visit, not whitening

If anything, this week is for a polish — a professional clean removes the surface staining that builds up on top of the brighter shade and leaves the teeth properly shiny on the day. We can also do a quick check that nothing's flared up (the wedding-week dental abscess is a real and unkind thing).

    Wedding morning: the small stuff

    • Avoid coffee, tea, red berries, and turmeric on the day itself (the enamel rehydrates fastest in the first 48 hours after whitening, but it's still slightly more receptive to staining than usual at the two-week mark)
    • Brush, but skip the mouthwash if it's the alcohol-based kind — dry mouth all afternoon is no friend to a long ceremony
    • Carry sugar-free gum for after the meal, before the photos resume

What it costs (and what it doesn't)

For weddings, take-home trays alone run £350-450 depending on which whitening system suits your enamel. Combination in-chair + trays sits around £650. These prices include the consultation, the impressions, the gel, and the post-treatment review.

What it doesn't cost: nothing. There's no booking fee for the initial consultation — if whitening turns out not to be right for you, you walk away with a plan, not a bill.

Eight weeks goes faster than you think. If your wedding is on the calendar, this is the week to book the consultation — 0121 354 7570 or suttondentalcare.co.uk.

    Your 8-Week Whitening Countdown

    • Week 8 — Book your check-up. Whitening only looks its best on healthy teeth, so we start here. A quick exam lets us treat any decay or sensitivity and confirm you're a good candidate. (In the UK, whitening must be carried out by a dental professional — so this is the safe, even way to do it.)
    • Week 7 — Scale & polish. A hygiene visit lifts surface stains from coffee, tea and wine, giving a clean, even base so the whitening takes uniformly.
    • Week 6 — Start whitening. We take a quick digital scan and make your custom-fit trays, then send you home with professional-grade gel to whiten gently — usually overnight — exactly as we direct.
    • Weeks 5–4 — Build your shade. Keep going with your trays and watch the shade lift. If anything feels sensitive, skip a night and switch to a sensitivity toothpaste — it settles quickly.
    • Week 3 — Hit your target. You'll be close to your ideal shade. This is also the moment for finishing touches like edge bonding, which need a little lead time before the day.
    • Week 2 — Protect it. A top-up if you need one, then start avoiding the big stainers — red wine, curry, dark coffee — so your new shade stays put.
    • Week 1 — Final polish. A last hygiene polish and you're photo-ready. Switch to a whitening toothpaste to maintain, and skip any last-minute whitening so the colour settles naturally.
    • Wedding week — Smile-ready. Keep a whitening pen handy for touch-ups, go easy on staining drinks on the day, and enjoy every photo.
