The Trial Smile: Seeing It Before You Commit to It

Half an hour wearing your proposed new smile, with nothing removed and nothing decided. It is the appointment that stops regret. Sutton Coldfield.

The single biggest fear people bring to cosmetic dentistry is not pain or cost. It is committing to something irreversible on the strength of a conversation and hoping it turns out to be what they had in mind.

There is a straightforward answer to that, and more people should be offered it.

    What it is

Your proposed new smile is planned from photographs and models. Those shapes are then converted into a temporary tooth-coloured material and placed directly over your existing teeth.

Nothing is drilled. Nothing is removed. Nothing is decided.

You then have the proposed result in your mouth. You can look in a mirror, smile properly, talk, photograph it, and see it in your own face rather than in a rendering. It comes off afterwards and your own teeth are exactly as they were.

    Why it changes the conversation

People are poor at judging tooth shapes in the abstract and very good at judging their own face. Put the two together and the feedback becomes specific and useful.

The comments we hear are almost never about dentistry. They are:

    • "They're too long at the front."
    • "That one's whiter than the rest of my face."
    • "I sound different saying 's'."
    • "My husband would notice immediately, and I don't want that."
    • "That's exactly it."

Every one of those is far more useful than agreeing to "natural-looking veneers" and finding out later.

What it tests that a picture cannot

Length. Longer front teeth look younger and more prominent. Too long and you catch them on your lower lip when you speak. Only wearing them tells you where the line is.

Speech. Front teeth are involved in producing several sounds. A shape that looks good and makes you lisp is not the right shape, and this is one of the commonest reasons a design gets adjusted.

How it moves. Teeth are seen while you talk and laugh, not in a still photograph. Some designs look excellent at rest and wrong in motion.

Your own tolerance for change. This is the one nobody anticipates. Some people want an unmistakable difference. Others discover they want their own smile, improved, with nobody able to say why. Both are valid, and most people only find out which they are when they are looking at the alternative.

Whether the colour works with your face. A shade that looks bright on a colour tab can look artificial against your skin and hair.

    What happens next

You say what you want changed. The design is adjusted and, if the changes are significant, tried again.

Only when you are happy does anything permanent begin — and because the final restorations are made to the approved trial shapes, the finished result closely matches the thing you actually agreed to, rather than an interpretation of a discussion.

Where preparation of the teeth is needed, the approved shapes also guide exactly how much is removed. That tends to mean less tooth taken away, because the amount is measured against the planned outcome rather than estimated in advance.

Who it is worth doing for

Anyone considering veneers, particularly on several teeth. Anyone whose teeth are being lengthened or whose bite is being changed. Anyone nervous about looking overdone. Anyone who has had cosmetic work elsewhere that they did not like.

For a single chipped corner being repaired with composite bonding, it is usually unnecessary — the work is reversible and takes one appointment anyway.

And the outcome people do not expect

Occasionally somebody wears their trial smile for half an hour, takes it off, and says they prefer their own teeth.

That is an excellent outcome. They have spent one appointment rather than a great deal of money, nothing has been removed, and they now know something about themselves they did not know that morning.

Thinking about it? Here are three ways to start, whichever suits you:

    • Book online, right now — book a cosmetic consultation in a couple of taps.
    • Message us on WhatsApp — 07512 582 750. Send a photo if you like; it's often the quickest way to get a straight answer.
    • Or simply call — 0121 354 7570.

There's no obligation and no pressure — plenty of people come once, take the written plan away and think about it for months.
