When Is It a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation that requires immediate attention to save a tooth, stop ongoing tissue bleeding, or alleviate severe pain.
Common Dental Emergencies
Knocked-Out Tooth
Time is critical! If a permanent tooth is knocked out:
- Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root
- Rinse gently with water if dirty
- Try to reinsert it in the socket
- If that's not possible, keep it moist in milk
- Get to our clinic within 30 minutes for the best chance of saving the tooth
Severe Toothache
Rinse with warm water, use dental floss to remove any trapped food, and take over-the-counter pain medication. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum as it can burn tissue.
Broken or Chipped Tooth
Save any pieces, rinse your mouth with warm water, and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. See us as soon as possible.
Lost Filling or Crown
Keep the crown if possible and bring it with you. You can temporarily reattach it with dental cement or toothpaste.
