Your Christmas Smile Starts in August

Everyone books their smile in January. For half of these treatments, January is already too late — here's the honest countdown to the Christmas photo.

Every practice in the country runs a "New Year, New Smile" campaign. Here's the awkward truth we'd rather tell you now: for several of these treatments, January is already too late for the photos you actually care about. So here is the honest countdown, working backwards from 25 December.

    The January problem

Every year it goes the same way. Someone sees a photo from Christmas Day — the one where they're laughing with their mouth closed, or not quite laughing at all — and resolves to do something about it. They ring in the second week of January.

And for some treatments, that's perfect. But if the thing they want is straighter teeth, they've just missed an entire year of photographs. Not because anyone was slow, but because teeth move at the speed teeth move, and no amount of enthusiasm in January changes what's achievable by the following December.

The people who look different in this year's Christmas photos mostly started in the late summer. That's the whole secret, and nobody advertises it, because "book now for a benefit in four months" is a harder sell than "new year, new you."

    Working backwards from 25 December

Here's what's realistically achievable, based on our own treatment timings:

Clear aligners / Invisalign — start now. Treatment typically takes 6 to 18 months depending on how much movement is needed. Straightforward cases starting in August are well placed for Christmas; more complex ones are working towards next spring or summer. Either way, August is the month that decides it — this is the one treatment where waiting genuinely costs you the year.

Implants — start now. A tooth replaced properly involves healing time that can't be hurried. Starting now means the work is settled and finished well before the party season, rather than mid-process during it.

Composite bonding — as late as autumn. Reshaping, closing small gaps and tidying edges is often done in a single visit. It's the treatment that rescues people who leave it late, and at from £175 a tooth it's also the most affordable way to change a smile noticeably.

Whitening — allow 2 to 3 weeks. Our take-home kits show results in as little as two weeks, with the gel worn gradually over two to three. Comfortably a November or early-December job — but not a mid-December one.

Veneers — autumn. Laboratory work and fitting appointments need scheduling, so this belongs in the diary before the run-up gets busy.

    Why August, specifically

Two practical reasons beyond the biology.

The diary. From late October the appointment book tightens considerably — everyone wants the same six weeks. Starting in August means you choose your appointment times rather than take what's left.

The money. Our 0% finance is available on treatments over £500 (subject to status), and the monthly payments run over roughly the same period as the treatment itself. Beginning in August means the cost is spread across the autumn — rather than arriving in the same month as everyone else's Christmas spending.

    What it's actually for

We should be honest that none of this is really about teeth.

It's about the photograph on somebody's mantelpiece. The video someone's cousin posts without asking. The moment in a room full of people you only see once a year, where you either laugh properly or you do the thing you've trained yourself to do — the half-smile, the hand, the head turned slightly away.

Most of the patients who come to us for cosmetic work don't describe their teeth at all when we ask what they want. They describe a feeling, and usually a specific occasion. Christmas is simply the occasion that most people can name.

Start with a conversation, not a decision

You don't have to commit to anything to find out where you stand. A consultation tells you which of these options actually applies to your teeth, what it would take, and what it would cost — and for orthodontics, implants and facial aesthetics that consultation is free.

Bring the photograph, if it helps. Plenty of people do.

Ready to work backwards from Christmas? Here are three ways to start, whichever suits you:

    • Book online, right now — book a free cosmetic consultation in a couple of taps. Consultations for orthodontics, implants and facial aesthetics are free, and there's no obligation to go ahead.
    • Message us on WhatsApp — 07512 582 750. Send a photo if you like; it's often the quickest way to get a straight answer about what's realistic.
    • Or simply call — 0121 354 7570.

Tell us what you're hoping to be able to do by Christmas, and we'll tell you honestly whether there's still time.

Sutton Dental Care — Aesthetics · Implants · Excellence. Treatment timings are typical ranges and vary with individual complexity; your own timeline is confirmed after a clinical assessment. Prices shown are "from" prices. 0% finance is available on treatments over £500, subject to status; terms apply.
